Colo. unemployment rate below national average
The national unemployment rate climbed for a ninth straight month, hitting a 26-year high at 9.5 %. Colorado's unemployment rate is 7.6 %.

The numbers sound high, but the chief economist at the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment says there is some good news.

"It's certainly a good sign to see the rate of job loss is slowing at the state level and now we're seeing it at the national level," said Alexandra Hall. She says layoffs are affecting more men than women.

Right now 10% of men are unemployed. 7.6 % of women are unemployed.

Economists say that's because the male dominated sectors like manufacturing and construction have been hard hit in the recession. Female dominated sectors like health care and education have been more stable.
