Cherry Creek Flooded

Cherry Creek through downtown Denver overflowed its banks during Friday's storm. April 23, 2010.

DENVER - Bag after bag of trash was pulled from the South Platte River Sunday. About 200 volunteers combed six miles of the river and its banks picking up trash. The volunteers were rafting, kayaking, walking and biking.

They estimate they cleaned up about two tons of trash, and they found some wild stuff in the process including pipes, a stove, a kitchen table, a shopping cart and a bike.

The group targeted the stretch between Union Avenue and Habitat Park.

It is a well-used area, and volunteers say they hope they make a difference.

"We care about rivers and we want to see them in their natural state as much as possible," said volunteer Ann Watts. This was the fourth annual South Platte River Cleanup.
