DENVER - Applications that let users change or "spoof" their Caller ID numbers are gaining in popularity. One such site allows you to change the phone number that shows up on someone else's Caller ID to be what ever you want it to be.
It's called SpoofCard and it's seen a spike in popularity that's off the charts.
SpoofCard is a service that disguises your phone number and changes it to anything you want it to be. You can block your number from view or even pretend to be someone else.
SpoofCard has the technology to disguise your voice to make you sound like a man or a women. Experts say people use this technology to protect their privacy. But others have taken it to the next level.
"People will use it whether to catch a cheating spouse, or to cheat on a spouse," says SpoofCard president Meir Cohen. This device, however, can be used to invade your privacy.
"If somebody were to call another person and put their cell phone number in as a spoof Caller ID, it will allow them to get straight into their voicemail," adds Cohen.
Cohen says the service is legal it just depends on how you use it.
"It's a fine line between sneaky and unlawful practices," he says.
This technology has been around for a few years but more and more people are using it to commit fraud.
"People trust their Caller ID," says Private Investigator Joe Slaton. "They have a bank show up on the Caller ID or a credit card number show up on the Caller ID.
Over the past year, SpoofCard has increased its business by 200%. The company has also developed LiarCard, a system for detecting the truth using voice recognition technology.
"You can call someone from any phone and find out if they are being truthful over the phone," says Cohen. LiarCard uses audible sound effects when the person is either lying or under stress that only the LiarCard user can hear. Cohen says the system is impressively accurate.
"This is based off government and military technology out of Israel. It's over 90% accurate."
