AURORA - An elderly couple in Aurora can sleep a little easier thanks to some Good Samaritans.
Just after the wife got home from the hospital, the sewer backed up into their home. The couple then learned they needed thousands in repair work that they simply couldn't afford.
But one local company came to the rescue.
We found work crews digging at the 30-plus year home of Roger and his wife, who didn't want their last name used. The couple suffers from serious medical issues.
After running a video camera through their sewer lines, experts from ARS/Rescue Rooter determined the lines were badly deteriorated. Estimates ran into the thousands of dollars.
"And I'm not in a position at this time to (pay) that," Roger told us, "It's kind of expensive and you know we got a lot of other things going on."
Because of mounting medical bills, the couple faced the real possibility of not being able to afford to live where they'd hope to live the rest of their lives.
"I was touched by the fact that Roger knows he needed to get this work done but didn't have the money to do it right now," said Dennis LaLiberte, regional manager for Rescue Rooter.
So after a discussing it with higher ups, the company offered to do the repair and sewer line replacement work for free. Which left the family "dumbfounded," in Roger's words.
"It was really, I don't know how to express it," he said.
Rescue Rooter has operated in Aurora for more than 30 years and says it tries to give back to the community.
"My father is diabetic just like Roger," said LaLiberte, "So I wanted to do something to help them out."
"It's very unusual and totally unexpected, and it's nice to know that these things occur once in a while," Roger said. Especially for those who need it most.
The sewer line was repaired and can now be maintained through two new access points, without further damage to the family's home.
