Romanoff to challenge Bennet for Colorado U.S. Senate seat
DENVER - Former state lawmaker Andrew Romanoff is going ahead with plans to challenge U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet in the Democratic primary next year.

Romanoff, a Denver Democrat, filed federal candidacy papers with the U.S. Senate on Thursday. A Romanoff aide says he will formally announce his bid next week.

Romanoff was speaker of the Colorado House, but term limits prevented him from running again when his term ended this year.

He was considered a likely pick for the U.S. Senate when then- Sen. Ken Salazar became interior secretary, but Gov. Bill Ritter instead chose Bennet, former Denver Public Schools superintendent.

Bennet's campaign manager did not comment on the Romanoff filing.
