DENVER - Nearly 55,000 people took to the streets of Denver Sunday morning raising more than $2 million for the care and treatment of themselves, their wives, sisters, daughters and friends suffering from breast cancer.

"The Race is always such a fun and joyful event; seeing the women, the families and all the people who were there simply because they care is heart warming," said Michele Ostrander, executive director of the Komen Denver Affiliate.

"Our mission is to end breast cancer. The Race and the money it raises - for awareness, for treatment and for care - is what will help us do that," Ostrander added.

In addition to raising funds, the Race for the Cure Series is committed to educating the public about early detection, the strongest method of surviving this life-threatening disease. The five-year survival rate is 98 percent when the disease is discovered while still confined to the breast. The Komen Race for the CureĀ® Series helps raise awareness of the importance of a positive breast health program - clinical breast exams beginning by age 20 and yearly mammograms at 40 years of age. As an organization, we are committed to ending breast cancer forever.
