Dan Woolley talks to reporters at DIA after returning from Haiti. (January 19, 2010) |
DENVER—
The Compassion International worker from Colorado Springs who was trapped in the rubble in Haiti for 65-hours says his iPhone helped him survive.Dan Woolley says he used a first aid application to treat his own injuries. He had a gash in his leg 3-inches wide and 9-inches long and used the app, Pocket First Aid & CPR, to look up compound fractures and shock.
Woolley took off his shirt, wrapped his leg injury, and used his belt to tie off the bleeding. His wife says he used a sock to wrap a cut on his head and also set the alarm on his iPhone to go off repeatedly so he didn't fall asleep or go into shock.
Then, he got busy writing.
"I wanted to leave some notes for my boys, so I spent some time writing in the dark," Woolley said.
Here is a quote of what he wrote to his sons Josh, 6, and Nathan, 3:
"I was in a big accident. Don't be upset at God. He always provides for his children, even in hard times. I'm still praying that God will get me out, but He may not. But He will always take care of you."
It took a few days for rescue crews to find Woolley. He used the flash on his camera to see through the darkness and was able to study the pictures and see which way to move through the rubble.
He says God gave him the tools he needed to survive.
Woolley is now at home in Colorado Springs with his wife and children. His co-worker David Hames is still missing.
