Puppies rescued from garbage

A passer-by found the puppies in a garbage can outside. Windsor Lake, Colo. (April 23, 2009)

WINDSOR - Two newborn puppies are lucky to be alive, thanks to the keen ears and quick action of a passer-by in Windsor.

Chery Legg was walking through Boardwalk Park, next to Lake Windsor, with her mother and son on Monday when she heard faint whimpering coming from a trash can. She dug through layers of trash to find the two newborn pups, shivering and cold, wrapped inside a plastic grocery bag.

They were less than a day old.

The family rushed the puppies to Mountainwood Pet Hospital where workers immediately began caring for the abandoned animals.

After several hours, Legg and her mother took the pups home and provided care until they were transferred to Animal Rescue Connection in Greeley.

To make a donation to help care for the puppies, call the animal hospital at 970-686-5725.

Windsor Police say if the person, or people, who abandoned the puppies are caught, they'll likely face animal cruelty charges.
