DENVER -
The night sky over lower downtown Denver lit up with red, white and blue Saturday evening in honor of local military servicemen and women who served in time of war.
Following a parade through downtown, veterans of several wars gathered with citizens who just wanted to say thanks.
Because Nov. 11th falls on Wednesday and the national holiday falls on Monday, Saturday was a natural date for the Salute to Veterans parade and ceremony at Union Station.
The annual event was sponsored by KYGO radio and American Furniture Warehouse, among others.
"In the past seven years, we have seen this celebration grow and grow," said Mayor John Hickenlooper. "We hope this thing gets even bigger in the years ahead."
Governor Bill Ritter, who noted that roughly 10% of Colorado's citizens are veterans of one service or another, also spoke at the event.
The celebration also saw lost and misplaced medals presented to fallen soldiers and those who helped during times of war. The homeless, many of whom are also veterans, were treated to free food and other services.
With two more days to say 'Thank You' to a vet, do your part it is the least we can do to say "right on" to the folks who maintain our freedom and guard our safety.
