Denver Police: medical marijuana caregiver shot by 'patient'
DENVER - Police say an altercation during a medical marijuana transaction resulted in a shooting that left one man dead Tuesday. The suspect was also shot.

Denver Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says officers responded to a home in the 2600 block of Leyden St. at 12:25 a.m.

"Through the investigation, detectives learned that the two men were conducting a medical marijuana transaction at the residence when an altercation occurred," Jackson said. "In the midst of this transaction, one man pulled out a gun and shot the other."

Paramedics pronounced one man dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. A short time later, Jackson said a man walked into Denver health Medical Center with a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Some neighbors say they had no idea that people could sell medical marijuana out of their homes.

"In my experience, when drugs are in a neighborhood, it leads to stuff like this," Torry Hughes said.

Another neighbor said the home didn't raise any eyebrows, until Tuesday.

"When night comes, this is a quiet neighborhood. There was no in-and-out like your typical drug house," Said Latta said.

Denver city council member Charlie Brown has been working to increase regulation for medical marijuana dispensaries, but he says it wouldn't include homes where it's legal to sell pot to up to five patients.

"We can't control everything. We try as hard as we can to get the storefronts and dispensaries," Brown said. "If this was a caregiver, he didn't have a very good relationship with his patient."

The case was being investigated as a homicide. The motive was unknown.
