LAKEWOOD, Colo.—
Lakewood launched a program today to help provide residents with some relief from the high cost of prescription drugs. The City is making free prescription drug discount cards available to Lakewood residents through a program sponsored by the National League of Cities (NLC). The discount cards offer Lakewood residents an average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs. The discount cards can be used by all Lakewood residents and have no restrictions based on a resident's age, income level, or existing health coverage. There is also no cost to Lakewood to provide the program, and the card can be used when purchasing prescription drugs not covered by insurance at approximately 100 pharmacies around Lakewood.
"These cards can be helpful for residents needing to pay for prescription drugs that aren't covered by insurance. While the card won't pay the whole cost of the prescription, it can help bring down the price," said Mayor Bob Murphy.
Cards are available at the City Clerk's Office and the Employee Relations Department, both at 480 S. Allison Parkway, at no cost to residents. Lakewood residents can also call toll-free 1-888-620-1749 or visit www.caremark.com/nlc for assistance with the program. CVS Caremark administers the program.
The City joined the program after City Council member Cindy Baroway learned about it from NLC.
"When I heard about this prescription discount card, I wanted to find a way for Lakewood residents to have this opportunity. It's an easy program to launch that will really benefit Lakewood residents while not costing Lakewood anything but the time to hand out the cards," Baroway said.
