Denver Mayor: grow your own
DENVER - Mayor Hickenlooper is challenging the City of Denver to start growing its food locally. He wants to encourage people to start planting their own gardens with fruits and vegetables.

Community gardens have already been sprouting up around the Metro area. One local grower says it's not only a way to save money and eat healthy but is helping her carbon footprint at the same time.

"We don't have to buy as much produce from the store, it's very environmentally friendly," said Ariel Choinard.

Businesses like the Rocky Mountain Seed Company have seen an increase in their sales and are trying their best to keep up on the high demand for seeds.

"We're definitely seeing an increase, we're not necessarily surprised because the economy tends to be that way, I always use the phrase that we're seeing the Victory Gardens of WWII coming back," said President Ed Barraclough.

The mayor officially declared Thursday as "Grow Local Day". He hopes to have 2009 more gardens throughout the city by the end of the year.
