Free H1N1 vaccine clinics scheduled at Denver Health Medical Center
DENVER - Marie Fornof is one of the lucky ones. She has already received her H1N1 vaccination.

It's one of the perks of working for Denver Health Medical Center as manager of Infection Prevention.

"It's quick and easy, and I feel wonderful," says Fornof, who has worked for the hospital for the past 3 years. Hundreds more will get the same opportunity one week from today.

Denver Health officials have announced the first of several free H1N1 vaccination clinics beginning next Tuesday. The hospital is working in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control.

Dr. Chris Urbina says the hospital has no idea at this point how many doses they will get, but stresses the priority is for high-risk groups like young children, pregnant women and those with medical conditions like diabetes and asthma.

Dr. Urbina anticipates a long line and says tickets will be given out to make sure everyone is accounted for who makes the cut.

The first clinic is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3 at the Rita Bass Trauma & EMS Institute, 190 W. 6th Ave., Denver. The times are 7 – 10 a.m. and 4 -7 p.m. Clinics are slated for the entire month. Times and dates always subject to change, depending on vaccine availability.

Marie Fornof is happy she received the vaccine. "There are no side effects," she says. Now she hopes she can have a positive effect on those who want to receive the vaccine as well.

No appointment is required for these first-come, first-served free clinics. Officials say it's a good idea to call the medical center's flu hotline at (303) 436-6100 or visit the website at denverhealth.org to make sure vaccines are still available, and the free clinics are happening as scheduled.

The H1N1 flu vaccination is recommended for the highest risk groups which include
  • children 6 mos. to 18 years old
  • health care workers
  • pregnant women
  • people 19-24 years old
  • people 25-64 years old who have other medical conditions such as asthma or diabetes
  • caregivers of children under 6 months old
