Eastwood appeared before the judge via a video monitor. A public defender was also appointed.

Authorities say the 32-year-old Eastwood opened fire with a hunting rifle on the Deer Creek Middle School campus as students were going home for the day. Two students were wounded.

School staffers, including math teacher Dr. David Benke, are credited with tackling and subduing the suspect until Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies could arrive.

Eastwood's public defender must schedule a preliminary hearing by March 12. The judge in the case denied a request to have a television camera in the courtroom and was deciding whether or not to release Eastwood's arrest affidavit to the media. The District Attorney's Office wants the affidavit to remain sealed because the sheriff's office has not completed its investigation.

Both victims, Matt Thieu and Reagan Weber, are recovering from their wounds at home. Family members say Thieu was released from Children's Hospital Monday.

Bond for Eastwood remains at $1,000,000.

Eastwood had been living on his father's ranch in Hudson, about 55 miles northeast of the school. His father, War Eagle Eastwood, believes his son suffers from schizophrenia.
