Hickenlooper proposes layoffs to close budget gap
DENVER - Mayor John Hickenlooper is proposing that 176 Denver city workers be laid off to help close a $120 million budget shortfall.

On top of that, 150 police officers, firefighters and sheriff's deputies could lose their jobs if they don't agree to forgo pay raises.

Hickenlooper's administration announced the proposed cuts Tuesday in response to the biggest drop in city revenues since the Great Depression.

The mayor is also proposing scaling back library hours and transitioning four recreation centers to private management.

A trash pickup fee had been considered but isn't part of the proposal.

The plan now goes to the City Council, which is expected to make a final decision on cuts in November.
