FORT COLLINS, Colo. - A Colorado State University student has accidentally sparked a firestorm of controversy by encouraging fans to wear Native American war paint to the men's home basketball game this weekend.
CSU sophomore Ben Margolit posted the message on his Facebook page, asking CSU fans to dress like American Indians to watch the team play the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday.
Critics call the posting racist and degrading to Native Americans.
School administrators issued a statement condemning Margolit's posting and scheduled a meeting for Friday to discuss the incident with students.
Meanwhile, Margolit has apologized for suggesting the "Cowboys vs. Indians" theme. He says he was simply trying to rouse team spirit. He is now asking CSU Rams fans to wear orange, the team's old color.
