DENVER -
Call it America's Team facing America's Most Surprising Team. Cowboys vs. Broncos. The team that signed Tony Romo vs. the team that almost signed him (Yeah, Mike Shanahan offered Romo more than Jerry Jones but he thought his best chance to play was in Dallas).
Good choice, I think.
The Cowboys come in at 2-1 and are on a short week schedule after a lackluster Monday night win over Carolina. Dallas in a word: underwhelming.
The Broncos come in at 3-0 after a win over the Raiders. Denver in a word: overachieving.
The Broncos, starting Sunday face a gruesome stretch---- as difficult a gauntlet as any team has on the schedule.
In October alone, they host Dallas and New England and travel to San Diego for a Monday Night Game.
Therefore, it only seems right that they have a bye week in there too before Halloween to balance out a group of games that will definitely tell us just how good this Broncos team is.
One last tidbit. On Sunday, Wade Phillips returns to Denver. He was the Broncos head coach for two years last decade. His 16-16 overall record paved the way for Shanahan to replace him. Should he struggle this season in Dallas, who might replace him in 2010? Well, it could be Shanahan----again.
A win on Sunday though will buy Phillips a little time. On the other hand, a loss...well. Let's just say, before Jerry Jones leaves town on Sunday, he might stop by The Mastermind's mansion in Cherry Hills Village. Just to say hello.
