DENVER -
Monday night's Broncos-Chargers game was more like watching a movie than a football game. It was like going to a flick you've heard mixed reviews about from your friends, but personally wanted to see for yourself.
You get to the theater, grab some popcorn and a soda, and settle in for the show and for the next few hours. You're transfixed by everything that happens on the screen.
The match-up had all the makings of a great show: An evil villain, a gritty protagonist, tons of plot twists and turns, plenty of excitement, and a finish that leaves everyone satisfied. It delivered.
To everyone but the San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos, that is, though for incredibly different reasons.
The Chargers are on life support at 2-3. They're 3 ½ games back of the Broncos, and looking like they don't have the answers; definitely not satisfying.
The Broncos aren't completely satisfied because, in their minds, they haven't accomplished anything. The common refrain in the locker room is "they don't hand out trophies for going (3-0, 4-0, 5-0, 6-0)."
That mindset is completely refreshing, and yet terrifying.
This Broncos team is embodying everything fans love in their guys. They play for each other. They practice and prepare diligently. They execute precisely and finish games with an executioner's vigor (outscoring opponents 76-10 in the second half).
They're terrifying for all the same reasons, to 31 other teams in the NFL. There is yet to be a challenge they haven't overcome, and there exists no team that they can't beat.
Now, it's into the bye week for some well-deserved rest. When the team emerges, they play at Baltimore, then home against the Pittsburgh Steelers on a Monday night.
So Broncos fans, time for you to enjoy the spoils of the first six weeks of the season. In two weeks, get your tickets, settle in, and get ready for the show to resume.
This little feel-good story is quickly turning into a blockbuster.
