Colorado Attorney General lists top 10 complained-about businesses
Your complaints about Colorado companies are being heard. That according to Attorney General John Suthers, who Monday put out a top ten list of companies drawing the most complaints.

There were about 2,000 official complaints filed with the AG's office in 2009, and hundreds more the first two months of this year.

Among those topping the list is At the Beach, a tanning salon company that Fox 31 has been investigating for months

Energy rebate rip-offs drew nearly a third of the total complaints to the AG's office.

Specifically a Grand Junction company called National Energy Rebate Fund, which was forced to shut down.

"So it does pay to make complaints," said Suthers, "And if you're one of 600 that have complained in regard to this energy rebate company you're one of the ones that are going to get a share in the 4.4 million dollars that we've recovered in that case."

About 325 complaints came in about cable, satellite TV, and phone companies.

"Given the volume of business that satellite television does, utilities do, things like telephone companies, they're always going to be there," Suthers pointed out.

Roofing and gutter contractors drew 193 complaints, mostly from Denver based Claims Specialists, Inc.

Nutritional supplement companies, primarily GNS Inc. of Arvada, got 145 complaints.

"This year we've got a lot of tanning salon complaints driven by one particular company," Suthers said.

That company, he said is At the Beach, which so far has sparked 185 complaints and was the subject of numerous investigative reports by Heidi Hemmat of Fox 31News.

Lakewood based Video Professor prompted 112 complaints.

It was followed by magazine subscription offers with 110.

Teeth whitening offers from Dazzle Smile drew 103 complaints.

Rounding out the top ten; complaints about vacation home resales, specifically Timeshare Rescue.

"We keep very close track of complaints and if certain companies are getting an inordinate number of complaints that's where we direct our enforcement priorities," Suthers said.

Suthers said his office is still actively investigating several of the companies, including At the Beach, to determine if any Colorado consumer protection laws were broken.
