GOLDEN, Colo. - Sixteen horses and one donkey taken from their ranch during an animal abuse investigation are now up for adoption.

The animals were seized in May after Jefferson County authorities got reports that a live horse was being dragged by its head and neck behind a truck. That horse had to be put down, but the other horses on the property have responded well to the care they've received since leaving the ranch.

"These horses and a donkey have been well-cared for, well-fed and they're very healthy. And we'd like to get them adopted back out to loving homes," said Jacki Keley, Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman.

If you're interested in adopting any of the animals, we've posted a link below, where you can take a look at the horses and submit a letter of interest.

The horses' owner, John McCulley, is facing dozens of animal cruelty charges. This May was the second time in two years horses were removed from his property.
