DENVER - The lone, remaining sign of life, a dog, was removed from the home on West Alaska Place Monday morning by animal control officers. The same home where police say a 3-year-old boy was shot in the leg, by his father.
29-year-old William Thalley was arrested for Child Abuse Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. The boy's mother, 25-year-old Nicole Fernandez, was also arrested, for Accessory to Child Abuse.
The boy was in serious condition at St. Anthony's Central.
When the parents took the boy to the hospital Sunday night around 7:20 p.m., police say the mother and father told them that an unknown male suspect had shot the boy near Morrison Road and Lowell Blvd. Police say further investigation found that story to not be true.
Authorities would not say whether or not the shooting was accidental or intentional, adding that the District Attorney's Office will make the final determination.
Jose Saenz lives next to the family. He says they have lived there less than a year. Saenz says he would see a lot of people going "in and out." He has seen the boy who was shot. "I saw him a few times; a little short guy. His hair is blond."
"I saw young guys there, in and out. I don't know if it's true or not (the accusation that the father shot his son). It's bad," Saenz said.
