Springfield, Colo. hosts special Simpsons stamp event
SPRINGFIELD, Colo. - Cowabunga, dude!" That popular expression made famous by Bart Simpson is expected to be heard several times when the Springfield, CO Post Office and community celebrate the new Simpsons stamps, based on the popular TV show, at a special event in Springfield, CO this Thursday, May 7th.

The new 44-cent Simpsons stamps, featuring parents Homer and Marge, son Bart, daughters Lisa and baby Maggie - will be issued and available at Post Offices nationwide that day. The price of a first class United States stamp goes from 42-cents to 44-cents on May 11.

The Post Office in the town of 1,562 people will host its special Simpsons Stamp celebration from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Thursday, May 7, at Chubby's Restaurant, 1165 Main St., in Springfield, CO. The town is in the extreme southeast corner of Colorado in Baca County, 155 miles southeast of Colorado Springs.

The Springfield, CO event is one of several special stamp events to be held in Springfield-named communities in the U.S. on May 7th. Springfield is the name of the community featured in the TV series. "Of course, says Springfield, CO Postmaster Charlie Turner, "we are proud to claim our great Springfield, CO community as the real hometown of the Simpsons."

At the Springfield, CO event, besides the new Simpsons stamps being available, there will be costumed Simpsons characters, a special Simpsons Springfield, CO pictorial stamp postmark featuring baby Maggie, "duh'o"-nuts, Simpsons contests and prizes, and other festivities.

"We're also having a customer costume contest so the kids and fans are invited to come dressed as their favorite Simpsons TV character," says Marcela Juarez Rivera of the U.S. Postal Service, who is coordinating the event with Postmaster Turner and the Springfield Post Office, and Chubby's Restaurant. "The winner of the costume contest will receive a beautifully framed Simpsons Stamp artwork piece."

"We invite everyone to help us celebrate and put our special Springfield, CO postmark on the Simpsons," added Postmaster Turner. "It should be a lot of fun. As Bart Simpson says, "Check it out, man."

Customers can purchase the stamps at Post Offices starting May 7, or by credit card by calling 1-800-STAMP-24, or by the web at www.usps.com/shop. Fans can also vote online for your favorite Simpsons stamp until May 14 at usps.com/Simpsons with 25 voters receiving a limited-edition Simpsons poster autographed by their creator, Matt Groening.

For those who cannot go to the Springfield, CO May 7th event, but who wish to obtain the special Springfield, CO pictorial Maggie Simpson postmark by mail, they should affix a Simpsons or other First Class stamp to each envelope/postcard of their choice, address the envelopes/postcards to themselves or others, place them in a larger envelope, addressed to:

After applying the postmark, the Springfield, CO Post Office will return the envelopes/postcards through the mail. There is no charge for the postmark. All orders must be sent by June 6, 2009.
